It\u2019s no secret that the au pair program promotes\u00a0foreign language learning, but sometimes the common phrases used by au pair agencies can seem like a new language too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s your quick guide to the most common words and phrases from the au pair program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au Pair<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A\u00a0young adult\u00a0from outside of the U.S. who comes and lives with an American family and cares for their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au Pair Stipend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The money an au pair receives in exchange for their childcare services. The weekly\u00a0au pair stipend\u00a0is paid directly to the au pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cluster<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The group of host families and au pairs that a Local Coordinator supports in a local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Departure Date<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The date an au pair returns to their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DS-2019 Form<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The form issued by InterExchange Au Pair USA that allows an au pair to apply for a J-1 au pair visa. The form displays the dates of the au pair\u2019s program duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education Stipend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0money\u00a0a host family must contribute to their au pair\u2019s required\u00a0academic courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extension Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Au pairs may apply for a one-time program extension for an additional 6, 9, or 12 months and can stay with their current host family or find a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Host Family<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An American family who welcomes an au pair into their home and treats them as an equal member of the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In-Home Orientation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A meeting in the host family\u2019s home between the host family, au pair, and Local Coordinator within two weeks of the au pair\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

InterExchange<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Au Pair USA\u2019s non-profit, parent\u00a0organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J-1 Visa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The cultural exchange\u00a0visa\u00a0that au pairs obtain to participate in the U.S au pair program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Coordinator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An Au Pair USA employee who lives in the community and actively\u00a0supports\u00a0host families and au pairs throughout their program year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The application review and interview process through which host families and au pairs get to know each and mutually agree to match together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Placement Specialist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The ultimate matching\u00a0expert\u00a0who helps support host families and au pairs to find each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Advisor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Educates new host families about the au pair program and helps them get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The time that an au pair is in the U.S. with their host family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional Supervisor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
