Most host families do not allow smoking in their homes and will not hire an au pair who smokes, even socially (smoking or vaping only occasionally in social situations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most au pairs understand the health risks of smoking, but may not have considered the impact it can have on their au pair program. Some host families may end a placement if they become aware that their au pair smokes, even socially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are plenty of reasons not to smoke or vape, especially as an au pair.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smoking has been proven to cause illness, cancer, and death, including problems with the lungs and heart. Smoking kills over 480,000 people in the U.S. every year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical professionals have recently started to report deaths caused by vaping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondhand smoke increases the risk of asthma, cancer, and other illnesses. It\u2019s especially dangerous to children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Host families with infants do not want the chemicals from smoke around their babies. This includes chemicals that remain in hair and clothes after smoking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking sets a bad example for host kids. They learn about the dangers of smoking in school, so seeing their au pair smoke can cause confusing messages. .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most host families don\u2019t allow smoking, and if they become aware of smoking, they may end their placement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Au pairs who smoke may have a difficult time rematching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The smell of smoke stays in clothes, hair, a car, and a room. Breath mints or perfume can\u2019t hide the smell of smoke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking or vaping is expensive. Au pairs can save that money and use it for fun adventures in the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are some tips to help you avoid smoking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you don\u2019t smoke or vape, do not start. It\u2019s addictive!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do smoke, speak with a medical professional in your home country about the best methods to help you quit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask a friend to keep you accountable and to stop you if you start to smoke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay out of situations where you would want to smoke, like a nightclub.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid hanging out with people who are smoking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit any alcohol consumption so your decision-making abilities aren\u2019t compromised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider doing some exercise when you feel the urge to smoke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice meditation or yoga.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think about the benefits of not smoking and remind yourself that you are a role model for your host kids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a support group in your community to quit smoking if you\u2019re finding it difficult to do so alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling not to smoke, it\u2019s best to be honest and ask for help. Reach out to your host family or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aupairusa.org\/host-family\/support\/\">Local Coordinator<\/a> and ask for their support.
